Every year when it was time to harvest the rice, every early morning, before dawn, the whole family went to work in the fields. At that time, although my mother was only eleven or twelve years old, she already had to help. They first used a kind of small, curved knife to cut the rice. This kind of knife is called a sickle. The rice was cut stalk by stalk, then small bundles were neatly arranged. After all the rice in the field was cut, they would carry a thresher to the field. When this machine turns, it could separate grain from straw. The harvested grains still had many fine hairs that were very prickly, called awns. Maybe because everyone was given a piece of land, even though one jin (half of a kilo) of vegetables was priced at only one or two cents, they still couldn't be sold. Many fresh vegetables remained unsold by noon, taken back home, and finally, as the family was unable to eat so much, the vegetables ended up rotting. Besides selling vegetables, Grandmother also raised chickens and sold eggs. She also sold grains like rice and wheat. My mom often went to sell vegetables too, sitting in the market for most of the day, just because sometimes Grandmother bought her a three-cent pancake. The pancake's crust was slightly charred, golden yellow, fragrant and crispy.
